NJALL is holding its seventh annual adult learner writing contest. This year we will award cash prizes in five categories - fiction, non-fiction, memoir, poetry and photography. All of the winners and selected other submissions will be published in a free magazine that will be available from our website in the summer of 2021. Winners and their teachers/tutors will receive printed copies of the magazine (when possible).

Meet Ruth Rivera, 2018 Scholarship winner. In the winter of 2017, Ruth earned her high school diploma. It was a difficult journey to get there, having moved and changed schools several times and finally dropping out. Ultimately, Ruth found the Literacy New Jersey’s HSE (High School Equivalency) program at the Elizabeth Public Library. The library had always been a comfortable place for her and when she met the HSE teachers she decided to try to get her diploma. This is how she described that time in her life:
“I then met the teachers in the HSE program and they were supportive, positive and convinced me that I could take the test and pass. I’m not sure I believed them at first. But I kept going to class and practicing and I was shown my assessment scores so I found the courage to sign up for the test. I was so nervous! It was challenging because I was working at Wendy’s at the time and I had to find time to study. Also, the library was more than a mile away from my house and I don’t have a car, so getting to class was also challenging. My real motivation was that I wanted to be the first person in my family to earn a high school diploma.”

Ruth had hopes of starting her college career at Union County College, majoring in Music and Theatre. With encouragement, she took the time to apply for the NJALL Scholarship, sharing her compelling story on her application. The NJALL Scholarship Committee recognized that Ruth had the potential to be a success and selected her for one of the Scholarships awarded in June 2018. Ruth is now attending Union County College and excited to be a college student. NJALL is thrilled to be a part of helping Ruth realize her dreams. |

On June 21st, NJALL will again host the Scholarship Award Ceremony and Breakfast to honor the winners of the 2019 NJALL Scholarship. This year, there will be even greater cause for celebration, because our 2014 Scholarship winner, Pasang Schreck, will be graduating from Georgian Court University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
Having been born in Nepal, Pasang was eager to learn the language and ways of her new country. As a mother of two young sons, she started attending classes at the Freehold ABE/GED Program of Brookdale Community College. In describing her experience, she said, “Adapting to a different culture, overcoming my fears, learning to read, speak and think in a new language, juggling, family work and school, all while trying to absorb knowledge in so many different subjects were some of the difficulties I faced.” With her passion for learning, hard work and supportive teachers, Pasang was eventually able to earn her high school diploma. She was not only successful, but represented her classmates as student speaker at her graduation. |
Encouraged by her teacher, she applied for the 2014 NJALL Scholarship, in which she shared the story of her journey and her dreams for her future. Her application was chosen as one of the winners and Pasang took her next big step, becoming a college student at Brookdale Community College. Because her grades reflected her excellent effort and determination, Pasang was recruited by Georgian Court University (GCU) to enroll in their Nursing Program.
Pasang continues to shine at GCU, so much so that the GCU Meridian Nursing Honor Society selected her for a leadership position as Secretary for this prestigious association. This spring, she will complete her last semester and graduate, enabling her to launch her nursing career and realize her dreams of making a difference in her community. Pasang is truly a star! She will be the first NJALL Scholarship winner to receive the new $1000 bonus awarded to those who earn a Bachelor’s Degree.
